The Grande Galerie was abandoned during World War II. In 1937-38, the museum removed and hid most of the art works, including the Mona Lisa. They were returned in early 1945.

Shinn was the youngest member of the group of modernist painters who explored the depiction of real life. He is most famous for his numerous paintings of New York and the theater. The performance and vaudeville subjects gave Shinn the perfect motif in which to blend gritty realism and dramatic spectacle.
